The national Sanctuary of Mejía Lagoon is situated on the coast of arequipa; 146 km. from the city of arequipa (3 hours by car) it was declared the national sanctuary on the 24th february 1984, in the mouth of the tambo river; it re-dresses enormous interest to be one of the stations (favorite places) for the most important migratory birds on the whole of the peruvian coast.
in the mejía lagoon national sanctuary, it is possible to find 141 species of birds, of which 84 are residents of the peruvian coast and 57, migratory, or they are found in this zone only at certain times of the year, with the purpose to escape the raw winter of other latitudes. of the migratory species, 17 come to mejia from other parts of peru, 4 of the species come from other countries of south america and 34 species come from north america.
